The Board of Clark County Commissioners is calling for applications for Clark County residents to serve three years on the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission. The Commission meets on the third Friday of each month from noon to 3:00 p.m. The 12-member Parks and Recreation Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the city council and county commissioners in matters relating to: planning, acquisition, development and operation of neighborhood, community and regional parks; greenways; open space; trails; recreation programs; and cultural programs and activities. Commission members may be called on to host public meetings and request public input on plans, new programs, budget preparation, etc. To be considered, applicants should submit a letter of interest and resume to Jennifer Clark, Clark County Board of Commissioners, P.O. Box 5000, Vancouver, Washington 98666-5000 or by e-mail – jennifer.clark@clark.wa.gov no later than June 20, 2008. Lelooska Museum will be open on Saturdays through Labor Day Weekend; 11 am to 3 pm - or by appointment. Saturday July 12, 2008. Miniature Button Blanket Class; 12:00 to 2:00 pm. $30/person. Reservation necessary. This is a hands-on class with no sewing skills required. Saturday July 26, 2008. Lelooska Foundation Masked Dances. A 20-30 minute performance at the Yale Valley Arts Festival Family Arts Day. Held at Yale Elementary School, 11842 Lewis River Road. For more information visit www.yalevalleyartsfestival.org. City of La Center Shred Day was held Thursday, April 24th, from 6-8 PM and served approximately 60 cars. The event was extremely appreciated by the citizens; the City received many compliments and expressions of gratitude for the service. Took an informal poll: most citizens learned of the event from the notice rec’d in their sewer bill. 2009 Centennial Committee The committee met for the first time on Tuesday, May 6th and will be meeting the 4th Tuesday of every month at City Hall at 6 PM – all are welcome. The next meeting is June 24th. The theme for the 2009 Centennial Celebration is: 100 Years Rich with History; Rich with Promise Movie Night July 25th Our first movie of the summer outdoor theater program at Sternwheeler Park features “Over the Hedge”. See you there! The Chamber will be a consessionaire with snacks and drinks for sale. Our Days – July 26, 2008 We are looking for volunteers for two shifts in the information booth at the park. At this point, we need to fill the 10am-2pm and 2-6:00pm slots. The afternoon shift will be during the same time as the Colgate Country Showdown so you'll be able to have a prime spot to listen! Events planned include the following: The parade route appears set (pending approval of city staff); parade will stage on Highland, come down Aspen to 4th; go east on 4th to the post office No monster truck event this year Lawnmower races (location still TBD) Cruise-in (location still TBD) Chips – will be having their buffet again Tavern – beer/wine garden in back Vendors & kid zone at Community Park Colgate Music Search Beautiful Baby contest Possibility of two shuttle buses provided from C-Tran Loaves & Fishes Currently Loaves & Fishes (formerly SNAP) is providing hot meals to our Senior Citizen’s weekly (once a week; Thursday’s, approx 10-2) at the City’s Community Center. Effective August, they are interested in expanding that service to twice weekly (Monday’s & Thursday’s). They currently serve approximately 25 people; in addition they deliver frozen meals to 7-8 homebound citizens. La Center High School Equestrian Team Chamber Member and Secretary, Joan Cooper, reported the results for the LCHS Equestrian Team's State Championship: They WON!!! Joan, who is with Bank of Clark County helped the Equestrian program get started at the high school and has coached there ever since. She is very proud of their accomplishment and so are we. The La Center Museum Association will be meeting on June 2, 7:00 pm at the Grange this time. The program will consist of Ken & Myrna Viles presenting the history of the Grange followed by Gary Ball a noted rag time pianist. Everyone is invited. The Museum is also selling raffle tickets to be drawn at "Our Days". 1st prize is a 250 + pig butchered and wrapped. 2nd prize is a $200 gift card to the Heritage Marketplace. 3rd prize is an ice cream social gift basket. The La Center Lions Club is continuing it's quilt raffle until the Holiday Bazaar Dec. 6. Costco has a golf tournament coming up: "Costco Wholesale & Doernbecher Hospital Golf Scramble". It will be held on Thursday, July 17th at Camas Meadows. Shotgun start at 8:00am. June 30th is the registration deadline. This will be the 4th year for this Golf Scramble. Cost is $125 before June 15th and $150 from June 15th to June 30th. Chili Cook-Off Please see attached FLYER promoting the Chili Cook-Off to be held during Our Days. If you would like to print out at copy and display at your business, that would be awesome. Please pass along to your email database as well. We would love to see some friendly rivalries taking place for bragging rights to the “People's Choice” award. Trophies will also be awarded in several other categories. The La Center Chamber of Commerce Presents The 2008 La Center Chili Cook-Off Saturday, July 26, 2008 Official Registration 1st Place Prize $300 • 2nd Place Prize $100 Trophies Awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place The 2008 La Center Chili Cook-Off contest is open to all local businesses and offers a great opportunity to showcase your business during the town-wide La Center Our Days event. For less than the cost of a local newspaper ad you can promote your business in your own 12’ x 12’ booth space, cook some chili and have the opportunity to win a first place prize of $300. Chili taster kits will be sold by the La Center Chamber of Commerce on the day of the event beginning at 1 pm until 5 pm for $5 each and include one voting ballot. Patrons will sample each chili and vote for their favorite. Ballots will be counted at 5 pm and an award ceremony will follow. All entries must be accompanied with a non-refundable $35 entry fee.* You may enter more than one chili per team but must pay $35 entry fee for each. All entries must be submitted and paid in full no later than Saturday, July 12, 2008. Chili contest is an “Anything Goes” format and will be held in the Chips Casino parking lot located at 318 Old Pacific Hwy in La Center.
