La Center Centennial
Do you know what 2009 represents to the city of La Center?
It's our 100 year Centennial and plans are in the works for
a 10-day-long celebration in August of next year. Do you
have a special talent or desire to help with the
Celebration? Our Chamber will be involved in many
capacities and if you want to lend a hand and join the
effort to make this an awesome event, please contact Karen
Dodds [karen8473@aol.com], Linda Tracy, or Wendy McGraw.

La Center Pedestrian Way Improvement

1) E 4th Street Sidewalk - of 90* of detached concrete
sidewalk along E 4th Street between the Library and the
Community Park Sidewalk. This will replace a
section of asphalt path running along E 4th between the
existing concrete sidewalks.

2) 4th Street Mid-block Crossing * concrete crosswalk with
ADA Ramps will be
installed along 4th between Aspen and Birch at the east end
of the diagonal parking spaces on the south side of the
road.

3) 5 ADA Ramps * ramps will be installed at 5 different
locations in the city to connect with existing ramps on the
other side of the road. The ramp locations are 5th and
Dogwood, 5th Aspen, 7th Pacific, 9th Pacific, and 10th
Pacific.

This work will be completed in September or October
depending on when the grant funds become available. Traffic
disruptions for the project will be minor except for the
4th
Mid-block Crossing. For the mid-block crossing traffic will
need to be detoured around that block for possibly a week
to complete the project. Access to all businesses on that
block will be maintained during the construction.

If you would like more information on the scheduled
projects please contact Bart Stepp, Public Works Engineer,
at (360) 263-7665.

More Simple Steps to Help Save the Planet and Save YOU
money!
1. Pack a waste-free lunch by eliminating plastic bags,
utensils and bags. If you substitute reusable containers,
you can save a bundle every year!

2. Walk instead of driving when possible. If 6% of us
walked the equivelent of one mile each day instead of
driving, it would save an eximated 30 thousand gallons of
gas nationally...every day!

3. Enough paper clips are produced each yar to hand every
person in the world at least three. For every one hundred
thousand paper clips produced, only twenty thousand are
used to hold together paper. The rest aren't used or thrown
away in the trash.

This from Opdahl Chiropractic: Married couples who play
together, stay together!
For married couples, finding moments to be together free of
financial, family or other stresses is not an indulgence,
according to new research from the University of Denver.
together -- especially while doing *new and exciting
activities* -- is the secret to a happy marriage.

"The more you invest in fun and friendship and being there
for your partner, the happier the relationship will get
over time," says Howard Markman, a psychologist who
co-directs the university's Center for Marital and Family
Studies.

*The correlation between fun and marital happiness is high,
and significant.*

Having a joyful marriage is unfortunately the exception
rather than the rule in the United States. This is tragic
as your happiness and ability to be optimally productive in
your life is severely limited when you are not in a happy
relationship with your spouse.

Taking some free time to really engage yourselves in
something fun (without the kids and without any worries) is
something we all can do more of, but there are other ways
to support your relationship as well.

Four Tips to a Happy Marriage

1. Fight fair. *The way you interact during marital
arguments is ,* says Timothy W. Smith, a psychology
professor at the University of Utah. , such as yelling at
or insulting your partner, leads to decreased intimacy and
*self-silencing* -- keeping quiet during a fight -- has
been linked to depression, eating disorders and heart
disease in women.

2. . Couples most likely to be married for the long-term
are those who maintain their positive feelings for their
spouse for at least the first two years. The can help you
to clear any emotional blocks that may be sabotaging your
relationship.

3. Read the book "Fighting For Your Marriage" . This book
is a valuable source of information for positively handling
disagreements between you and your spouse, which will
increase the success of your relationship.

4. . People feel happiest in relationships where they feel
the other person helps them achieve their own personal
goals.

Simple Steps to Help Save the Planet and Save YOU money!

1. Sell, donate, or recycle your cellular phones. Less
than 1 percent of cell phones are currently recycled and
there are five hundred million used cell phones laying
around in the US alone!

2. Unplug your power. Ten percent of the electricity used
in your home and office is burned by communication devices
and appliances when they are turned off.

3. Download your software. With more than one billion
unwanted computer disks being thrown away every ear, the
mountain of waste can me dramatically reduced by
downloading!
