Presidents message:

The response to our Open House and Small Business Expo has been underwhelming so we are making every effort to boost participation! We need at least ten more exhibitors to make this a viable event for all. Our ad was in the Reflector on Wednesday and so we expect public attention and attendance. It's not a lot of money; if you are a Chamber member or non-profit, the cost is $10, and non-members pay $20 for booth space. You may be getting a call from Ron Ridnour in the next day or two so go ahead...say yes!

Because Halloween is on a weekend and not an after-school event this year, our Chamber is not going to be setting up a Trick or Treat station in La Center Saturday night. Remember to set your clocks back 1 hour Sunday November 1st (Saturday before you go to bed).

The Lewis River Mobile Food Bank rolls in to action next weekend! As project of Chamber member, Highland Lutheren Church, their hope is to help feed anyone who is hungry. The delivery schedule is from 2 to 4pm on:

-- Nov. 1: Fire District 10, 37604 N.E. 119th Ave., View.

-- Nov. 8: First Independent Bank, 305 N.W. Pacific Highway, La Center.

-- Nov. 15: Amboy Middle School, 22115 N.E. Chelatchie Road, Amboy.

-- Nov. 22: Yacolt location to be determined.

The La Center Christmas Festival is Sunday, December 6th and the Chamber is looking for HELP! We need members to lend a helping hand with decorating so please call Wendy at 690-5402. Linda Tracy is in charge of entertainment and is currently looking for people interested in a vocal performance. Call her ASAP at 989-6301.

The Chamber Christmas Party is December 2nd. Save the Date! Invitations will be out soon.

Thanks, and have a great month!

Wendy McGraw

Use Caution This Winter When Using Space Heaters

With home heating costs on the rise this winter, many people are turning to alternate heating sources to keep costs down. If you plan to use space heaters this winter, use extreme caution.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), portable and fixed space heaters caused a disproportionate share of home heating fire deaths in 2002, the most recent year for which data is available. Space heaters were involved in 25 percent of home heating fires, but 74 percent of the deaths.

How To Choose The Right Space Heater

Select a space heater with a guard around the flame area or heating element to protect children and clothing.

Choose a heater that has been certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Buy a heater that is the correct size for the area you want to heat. The wrong size heater could produce more pollutants and may not be an efficient use of energy.

Read and follow the manufacturer's operating instructions, and make sure all members of the household understand how to operate the heater safely.

Make sure the heater has an automatic "tip-switch," a cutoff device that turns off electric or kerosene heaters if they tip over.

How To Prevent Space Heater Fires

Place the heater on a level, hard, noncombustible surface.

Keep the heater at least 3 feet from bedding, drapes, furniture or other combustible items.

Turn off the space heater when you leave the area, and never leave a space heater on while sleeping or if you leave home.

Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

Do not use older space heaters or heaters with cords that are cracked or frayed.

When used correctly, space heaters can make a cold room comfortable and can help curb heating costs during the winter months. By following a few precautionary measures when using space heaters, you can ensure your family's safety and warmth.

For more information about home safety and insurance coverage, contact Denise Koopman at COUNTRY Financial at 887-2211.

END-OF-YEAR-CHORES, NEW YEAR DREAMS

As you clean up your vegetable and flower gardens for fall, get the most use from the refuse. Some garden cast-offs can be shared with your poultry or livestock (be sure no mold is present, and that the leaves or other plant parts are not toxic). Other yard debris makes good mulch for your perennials. Place a nice layer of leaves or prunings over bulbs, around the base of shrubs, etc.

For those pesky big branches and woody debris, you may dispose of them in a controlled fire. Remember, the county-wide burn ban was lifted October 1 - you can now burn according to specific regulations. Piles larger than four feet high need a permit. An on-line form is available for burn piles smaller than 10-by-10 feet. For more information, call (800)323-BURN.

It's not too late to plant a cover crop in your vegetable garden. And don't forget to put in garlic and onions sometime in the next month for harvest in the early summer. Spend some of these cool evenings browsing gardening catelogs so you can get a jump on 2010's Spring gardening chores and seed or seedling purchases.

DOG OWNERS IN RIDGEFIELD: SIT, STAY, LISTEN!

The City of Ridgefield has updated its regulation of animals. The new ordinance establishes a 30-day period within which an application for license must be made after the acquisition of a new dog that is six months old or older. New residents have 30 days to apply for the license of a dog. There are other restrictions in the ordinance covering exotic animals in the city, potentially dangerous animals, housing poultry or livestock, etc. Call City Hall (887-3557) for more information.

LOCAL ROYALTY IN VETERAN'S DAY PARADE

The Veterans Day Parade is Saturday November 7th, and the new Miss Teen LaCenter Court will be riding the City of La Center float. The parade starts at 11 a.m. from the Fort Vancouver Barracks on Evergreen Blvd. and goes about a mile and a half to Esther Short Park.

There are two themes..."Celebrate Freedom" and "Celebrating 160 Years of the Army at Fort Vancouver". The parade goes on, rain or shine, so come show your support and enjoy the freedoms we have!

Lelooska Foundation

Don't miss our last evening living history program for fall 2009. There are still seats available for Saturday November 28. Call 225-9522 for prices and to make a reservation.

Our program season is winding down early this year to avoid rescheduling complications should our area be blanketed by snow again this year.

Should you have out of town visitors and wish to bring them to see our extensive museum collection or other buildings at the cultural center, please call a week in advance, if possible, to schedule an appointment. Someone will likely be in the office 4 days a week.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Enjoy a quiet day in the company of your family and friends. Eat well, rejoice in your freedoms, and give thanks for the abundance of the season.

Remember those whose tables may not be so heavy laden, or whose family may not be close by.

Please keep them, and all loved ones who are far from home -especially those in service to our country - in your thoughts and prayers.
